Robert McVoy Obituary

Robert C. McVoy, age 93; beloved husband of the late Lucy R. (nee Byczkowski); caring father of Kelley Eppich (Chris); loving grandfather of Robert; dearest brother of James McVoy and Jean Perko (both deceased); dear uncle; US Army Veteran.

Bob McVoy lived his entire life (93 years) in Garfield Hts. Ohio, except for when the Army had him stationed in Germany from '51 - '53. He ran the kitchen where he would work with the other cooks to prepare up to 1200 meals for "the boys". He was always at odds with his CO about the menu, the stock pot, and the right way to bake meatballs in the industrial oven. He talked at length about the beauty of Germany and the Zugspitze Mountain. When he had time off, skiing was a popular pastime. When he returned from Germany He married the love of his life, Lucy Byczkowski, and they were together for 62 years with her passing in 2016. Most people will remember Bob as the proprietor of Turney Town Lanes in Garfield Heights. He also owned Euclid Green Lanes in Cleveland. Bob was always happy to teach people how to bowl, and there were hundreds of them over his career. He also worked with developmentally disabled children and adults and built special ramps so that no matter your disability you could get up on an alley and push a ball down the ramp. There are many memories of tears of joy on the faces of those that participated. He would even open up the lanes on some holidays so that families could have something fun to do while Grandma / Mom would be working at home in the kitchen getting things ready for the holiday meal. As they said, "it got them out of their hair!". When Bob wasn't working, he was an avid golfer, having a 6 handicap and he also had a hole in one. He belonged to Sharon Country Club for over 50 years and also played locally at Weymouth, Fairlawn, Medina, and Firestone. Whenever he traveled, there would be a round of 18 nearby. He even traveled to Scotland to play where golf originated. Bob was also a sports fan. That started when he was in high school and played all three sports; baseball, basketball and quarterback of the football team. He was inducted into the Garfield Hts. Sports Hall of Fame representing the class of 1949 in 2013. He followed all of our local teams and was always at the Browns game on Sundays, most of the time wearing his Browns snowsuit with Brownie the Elf. Bob's family would like to thank The Cleveland VA Medical Center and its wonderful staff of Doctors and nurses for the wonderful and compassionate care that he received throughout his life and during his journey with cancer. Bob will be remembered for his sense of humor and his zest for life. He will be greatly missed and forever loved.
